Not sure what you are looking for?  Want to browse all the materials in MERLOT?  Well you can.  Simply click on the Browse All Materials link on the Search Page and you will be taken to the list of all materials.  Narrow your choices by subject category, material type, mobile or other filters to help you find what you want in the collection.  Click the yellow arrow for Materials on the left side of the page and make your selections.

Add a Material to the MERLOT Collection

As a MERLOT member, you  can add learning materials to the  MERLOT collection.  This means adding the metadata for a material  to describe the item and provide a URL.  If there isn't a URL for the item, it cannot be added to MERLOT.  MERLOT does not store learning materials. Only the metadata (descriptive items) are stored on the MERLOT site. To maintain an accurate site, MERLOT runs a link checker on a monthly basis to ensure the validity of the materials. For more information, contact the MERLOT webmaster at webmaster@merlot.org.  For more information on the Add a Material process, click here.

Create with Content Builder

The MERLOT Content Builder is a webpage and website development tool  integrated into MERLOT.  You must be a MERLOT member to access the functionality.  To start creating pages, select Create Materials with Content Builder tile on the home page.  or from a members profile page.  Webpages are easily created using Content Builder's templates. For more information, go to Create Materials with Content Builder page for more information.

Create Bookmark Collections

If you have been using MERLOT and are familiar with Personal Collections, you may have noticed a change.  As of February 2015, MERLOT changed Personal Collections  to Bookmark Collections and Course ePortfolios (see below).  Existing MERLOT Personal Collections populated with materials were automatically converted to Bookmark Collections. Further, if you included any strategic elements (e.g., prerequisites, approach and outcomes, assessment, etc.) when you created your Personal Collections, those Personal Collections will be converted to Course ePortfolios.  You will be able to find your Bookmark collections and Course ePortfolios (if you have them) on your member profile page.

A Bookmark Collection is a great way for a member to save a number of materials to use in a course or to group together without having to bookmark each one on your computer. Each Bookmark Collection has a unique URL to make it easy to share with colleagues or students.  For information on how to create or add a Bookmark Collection, go to the Create a Bookmark Collection page.

Often, MERLOT users find learning materials in the collection that they wish to collect and organize under a specific theme, topic, or label.  MERLOT members can do that by creating a Bookmark Collection.  A Bookmark Collection is like an annotatable folder in which such collected materials can be saved for subsequent use.  A Bookmark Collection, for example, can be used to save a set of learning materials related to a topic in a course. Bookmark Collections are discoverable and shareable by other MERLOT users.  The frequency with which a material is stored in a Bookmark Collection is considered to be a ‘statement’ of the popularity or value of that material.  Because of that, MERLOT displays with each material in the collection, the number of Bookmark Collections in which the material has been placed by other MERLOT Members.

Create Course ePortfolios

The MERLOT Course ePortfolio allows you to build your entire course – from prerequisites to online resources to assessment – all within MERLOT.  Course ePortfolios provide MERLOT members with the opportunity to define strategic elements of a course (e.g., prerequisites, approach and outcomes, assessment, etc.), including web-based course references.  Consistent with MERLOT’s philosophy of openness, you will be able to  share your Course ePortfolio with colleagues and students (a unique URL), or download it into a Word document and create your course syllabus.  For more information on how to create a Course ePortfolios, go to the Creating a Course ePortfolio page.

Create Learning Exercises

The Learning Exercise wizard/feature allows you to create an exercise for use in a classroom or course based on a material from the MERLOT collection.  When a Member uses a MERLOT material and finds a valuable way of using it for instruction, the Member may subsequently develop a related, supplementary material.  That supplementary material is called a learning exercise in MELROT.  A Learning Exercise is automatically "attached" to the original material with its link (url) displayed on the Material Detail Page.
