Academic Discipline Communities

The MERLOT collection of Open Education Resources (OERs) is noteworthy among others because of the quality of the learning materials in the collection. These materials are catalogued in a variety of ways, one of the most important being its academic discipline in which the learning material might best be used for teaching and learning. MERLOT academic disciplines are similar to those found in a college course catalogue.

Most MERLOT academic disciplines are maintained by a discipline Editor and a related editorial board of peer reviewers who ensure the quality of the materials catalogued in their  discipline. When a material is submitted to MERLOT, it may be catalogued in multiple disciplines.

MERLOT also provides members of each of its academic disciplines with the opportunity to focus on and present topics of interest related to teaching and learning by providing a discipline-specific web portal that contains content unique to that discipline. The content in each portal is maintained by a subject matter expert in the discipline.
