The Learning Exercise feature in MERLOT allows you to create an exercise for use in a classroom or course based on a material from the MERLOT collection.
To begin creating a Learning Exercise, first browse to or search for the MERLOT material you’d like to create the Learning Exercise around and select the material (click on the title in the search results) to open the Material Detail page. Then, below the Go To Material button, click "Create a learning exercise" link.
If you are not yet logged into MERLOT, you will be prompted to log in. If you are not yet a member of MERLOT, you can join here. Membership is free! Only MERLOT members can add Learning Exercises to a material in MERLOT.
Once logged in, you will be taken directly to the Learning Exercise form.
Enter a title and description for your Learning Exercise. Also, select the appropriate audience for the exercise. The disciplines that define the material will be listed below the Audience option. By default, whichever categories the original material was tagged in will automatically be included in your Learning Exercise form. These categories however can be deleted, and new categories added, as you see fit. To add more, select from the categories drop down and they will be added to the list. To remove any that are not specific to your exercise, simply click the trash can icon next to the specific category listed.
Next, enter the actual text of the exercise (required). This can be as simple or as detailed as you’d like to include what the student is expected to complete. You may also wish to list the topics covered, select the type of task, and provide the expected time required for the Learning Exercise. (Optional)
The last few sections may be important to include information for others to know if they meet the requirements to assign or complete the exercise This also includes specifying Learning Objectives, technical notes and Assessment information.
When you have finished entering all of the information, click Submit, and you will be taken to your new Learning Exercise! You can edit your Learning Exercise at any time by clicking the Edit Learning Exercise link in the Info box at the top-right corner of the page.
